The Counselors have a cat, and her name is Buffy. But Buffy is more than just a cat. She’s an experience. With her gentle nature and unreliability, she’s earned her title as our honorary Counselor of Comfort. Just please do not ask her to exert any energy, okay?

In 2017, Buffy was rescued from the Philadelphia SPCA where Counselor Jonathan’s friend Trish worked. Trish was fostering Buffy after she had a litter of three kittens (Buffy had the litter of kittens, not Trish) and she reached out to Counselor Jonathan about this glorious cat that needed to find her forever home.

This chonky ass bird watcher is a sweetheart through and through. Unlike other nasty mean fugly bullies, Buffy never hisses or swats… unless you give her a reason to. Then that is on you. She’s all about making new friends, spreading good vibes, and sniffing shoes. Like she will stick her face in your shoe and HUFF that shit like glue. While she may not be the most playful with humans, she’ll entertain you with her solo toy-chasing exercises (for less than one minute at a time. She is on low power mode.) and her undeniable nunu nana charm. Buffy’s unique blend of lazy and curious makes her a heavyweight delight in any room. You’ll often find her lounging in a sunny spot, or vibing to soft jazz in the mess hall. Just don’t try to pick her up… Buffy prefers affection on her own terms. That said, when the mood strikes, she’ll claim your lap as prime real estate, rewarding you with the softest purrs imaginable.

And you know what? She isn’t the most graceful and balanced bitch in the bunch. Yeah, she has fallen off the top of the fridge in the mess hall kitchen, and yeah she had accidentally shitted on the side of the litter box because her aim is off, and okay sure, there was one time where she knocked over a can of paint in cabin 5. But she is easily embarrassed so cut the lady some slack.

A Day in Buffy’s Life

Mornings at Camp Shady Birch start with Buffy’s routine of demanding breakfast, followed by a luxurious grooming session. The sound of her preening herself has been reported by campers to sound like duct tape slowly being peeled off a damp wall. Afterward, she’s off to her favorite pastime: inspecting shoes. She just needs to check their interior architecture for a minute. There’s no sneaker, sandal, or hiking boot that escapes Buffy’s curious sniff test. The stinkier the better in her book.

Afternoons are for napping (preferably in a sunbeam) interrupted only by brief bursts of energy to chase her toys or “supervise” podcast recordings alongside Sammich. In the evenings, she becomes the lap queen, selecting one lucky camper to grace with her presence while her smooth jazz playlist plays softly in the background.

Why Buffy Matters

Is that even a fucking question? We can all take a note from the Book_of_Buffy.pdf: At Camp Shady Birch, Buffy reminds us to embrace life’s little pleasures: a warm lap, a good meal with a tuna base, and the joy of simply being yourself.
